FOSDA Joins the Global Community to Commemorate the International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament

International Women's Day for Peace and Disarmament commemoration

On 24 May 2026, in commemoration of the International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament, the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) joined the global community in recognizing the critical role women play in advancing peace, disarmament, and human security. Together with the GHANAP II Coalition, the Women Mediators Network of Ghana (WOMNET), the UNOWAS Working Group on Women, Youth, Peace and Security (WGWYPS), and NOPSWECO, FOSDA used the occasion to highlight the indispensable contributions of women to conflict prevention, mediation, and community security. Drawing on findings from its monitoring of the Ghana National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325 (GHANAP II), FOSDA emphasized that while awareness and commitment to the Women, Peace and Security agenda have increased, the absence of a dedicated national budget continues to hinder effective implementation. The commemoration therefore served as a call for a shift from symbolic inclusion to meaningful financial investment, ensuring that women have the resources and institutional support needed to sustain their vital contributions to peacebuilding, disarmament, and national security.

The monitoring categorized these incidents into physical, economic, and gun-related violence, providing security agencies and researchers with a clear map of national “hotspots.” This ongoing data collection is a cornerstone of FOSDA’s “Watchdog” role, providing the evidence needed to advocate for early-warning systems and more effective community policing. Understanding these trends is the first step in preventing the escalation of social tensions into full-scale communal conflict.
