FOSDA Participates in Week-Long Training on Preventing Violent Extremism in Northern Ghana
From 23rd to 29th August 2026, FOSDA, represented by Zenab Musah of the Upper East Regional Youth Network, participated in a week-long training on Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) organised by CRS Ghana.
The training brought together a number of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from the five regions of Northern Ghana, including FOSDA. It sought to strengthen participants’ knowledge and capacities in preventing violent extremism, enhancing community resilience, promoting social cohesion, and supporting collaborative approaches to peacebuilding and security.
Some of the topics covered during the training included:
- Understanding Violent Extremism, Terrorism, and Radicalization
- Regional Security Dynamics: The Sahel Crisis and Its Implications for Ghana
- Drivers of Violent Extremism in Northern Ghana
- Ghana’s PVE Framework and Security Architecture
- Conflict Analysis and Conflict-Sensitive Programming
- Early Warning, Community Resilience, and Local Response Mechanisms
- Community Engagement and Participatory Approaches
- Addressing Youth Vulnerability, Gender Dimensions, and Inclusion
- Social Accountability in Preventing Violent Extremism
- Technology, Social Media, and Online Radicalization
- Coordination and Collaboration Between CSOs and Security Institutions
- Human Security and Human Rights Approaches to PVE
- Designing Effective Community PVE Projects
A series of practical exercises were undertaken throughout the training to assess participants’ understanding of the various topics. Participants also developed Group Action Plans, reflected on Lessons Learned, and explored the Role of Civil Society Organizations in Preventing Violent Extremism.
The training provided an important platform for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and strengthening collaboration among CSOs and other stakeholders working to promote peace, security, and community resilience in Northern Ghana.
