Arms Control & Disarmament

Arms control and disarmament in Ghana play a crucial role in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development. The country has made significant strides in aligning with international frameworks, such as the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, to regulate the flow and use of arms. Despite these efforts, challenges remain, particularly in curbing the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which often fuel local conflicts and electoral violence. FOSDA continues to campaign for the ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear-Weapons (TPNW), conduct studies on defence expenditure and raise public awareness on the dangers of uncontrolled arms. FOSDA also embarks on annual campaigns under the auspices of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear-Weapons (ICAN). At FOSDA we believe strengthening arms control and promoting responsible disarmament are essential steps towards ensuring a safer and more stable Ghana.
