Stakeholders at a research dissemination workshop have called for the development of Green Skills Development Objectives for all Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs under the various Trade areas in the TVET System. This call was made by representatives of FOSDA; Industry players and Technical Institutes during the dissemination of research findings on the 3rd edition of the My TVET My Report activity held in Accra on 8th October, 2025 with support from OXFAM in Ghana.
Lead researcher, Prof. Doreen Adi in her presentation recounts that though over 80% TVET facilitators have awareness of Green TVET compared to 54% of learners do. She added that the inadequacy of conscious effort to green skills training is a contributory factor. She also revealed that currently most technical schools 61% have students passionate about Solar Panel technology and Recycling but have limited resources to fully train students. She noted that this finding is a wake-up call to ensure a focused green objective for all the TVET course so that no trade areas and their related skill is lacking of green responsiveness in future.
Representatives from Industry and some technical institutes also noted that there is currently limited opportunity to utilize green skills in industry making the linkage between education and industry to remain weak.
Speaking to the media FOSDA’s Ag. Programmes Manager, Solomon Okai underscored the low awareness of Green TVET among technical students as a result of both limited and slow revision of curriculum to specific Green objectives on the over 45 TVET programs.
“One of the challenges has to do with tailor made focus. It is looking like the we have not fully grasped the green skills concept and its direct application to the over forty-five (45) TVET programs under the four (4) trade areas of Engineering, Building, Hospitality and Business. And so, the learners are having difficulty explaining what green means to the skills they are acquiring”
The research dissemination is conducted to study and understand the progress and challenges made in TVET service delivery. It provides opportunity to make policy recommendations.
