The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) and the West Africa Centre for Counter-Extremism (WACCE) have held a strategic meeting with the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to discuss the implementation of alternative livelihood skills training for 80 youth in 10 mining communities. This engagement forms part of the second phase of the Mining for Peace (M4P) project, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable peace, security, and development in mining communities.
During the meeting, FOSDA and WACCE highlighted the urgent need to provide these alternative skills to provide more options in the local economic economy. The Deputy Minister commended the organizations for their commitment and reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for initiatives that enhance community resilience and sustainable development. The parties discussed collaborative strategies to implement vocational training, entrepreneurship programs, and other livelihood interventions tailored to the needs of affected communities as well as in alignment with the Local Content law.
About M4P
Launched in 2023, M4P is an initiative by FOSDA and WACCE, designed to contribute to reducing violence and violent extremism vulnerabilities in mining communities. The project focuses on building community resilience, promoting dialogue between stakeholders, and providing practical alternatives to illegal mining. The project is being implemented in five key mining regions: Ashanti, Central, Savannah, Eastern, and Western.
