As we commence the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, starting today, November 25, the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) emphasizes the urgent need to address violence against women, especially during this pivotal voting period. This year’s theme, “Every 10 Minutes, a Woman is Killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women,” underscores the alarming statistics that reveal the severity of this issue.

In 2023 alone, approximately 51,100 women were murdered by intimate partners or family members, translating to one woman being killed every 10 minutes globally. This figure highlights the pervasive nature of gender-based violence, particularly in contexts where political instability and conflict prevail. During election periods, the risk of violence against women often escalates, as political tensions can exacerbate existing societal norms that condone violence. Research indicates that women face increased threats of harassment and violence when exercising their right to vote, which can deter their participation in the electoral process.

Recognizing these challenges, FOSDA’s Ballot Not Bullet project aims to promote peaceful civic engagement and empower women to actively participate in political processes. By fostering an environment where women feel safe to vote and engage in governance, we can significantly contribute to peacebuilding efforts within our communities. The project advocates for policies that not only protect women’s rights but also ensure their voices are integral to decision-making processes.

As we embark on these 16 days of activism, it is crucial to align our efforts with the protection and prevention pillars of UNSCR 1325, which call for safeguarding women’s rights and preventing violence against them during conflicts and electoral processes. We urge all stakeholders—governments, civil society organizations, and individuals—to prioritize the protection of women this election period.
Let us work together to create a safe environment where every woman can exercise her right to vote without fear of violence or intimidation. By implementing robust protective measures and promoting awareness about gender-based violence, we can ensure that women’s rights are upheld and their contributions recognized in shaping a peaceful future. Join us in advocating for a society where every woman is empowered to participate fully and freely in democracy.
