The recent threats of violence made by Mr. Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, the new Mayor of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, directed at unauthorized traders in the Kumasi metropolis are deeply concerning and unfortunate.
At a time when Ghana is grappling with increasing violence among students, particularly in senior high schools, as well as the unrest caused by political party supporters regarding the appointment of Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Mayor Boadi’s rhetoric contributes to a troubling culture of violence and should be unequivocally condemned. Such statements not only nurture a dangerous culture of violence but also undermine the principles of dialogue and understanding.
The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) urges the Kumasi Mayor to retract his statements and adopt alternative, constructive measures that promote compliance with the local rules and regulations among traders , fostering a cooperative environment for all traders and people in the Kumasi metropolis. It is important that we work towards solutions that promote peace, stability, and progress in our communities and Nation.
According to FOSDA’s Media Monitoring of Violence incidents in Ghana, the Ashanti Region has recorded nearly 300 cases of violence over the past three years (since June 2022). The Mayor’s call for state-sponsored violence could embolden other duty bearers to adopt similar stances. This may ultimately lead to an increase in violent incidents across the country and threaten Ghana’s reputation as a safe destination on the international stage.
