The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) is commending the Western Regional Police command for the improved security situation having recorded only 13 robbery cases in 2024. According to the command these 13 robbery cases were recorded across its zonal areas made up of 5 divisions, 11 districts and 38 police stations.
The data from the Regional Command appears to be in sync with FOSDA’s Media monitoring of violent incidents in Ghana between 2023-2024.
In 2023, FOSDA recorded a total of 29 violent incidents in the Western Region which resulted in 8 injuries and 22 deaths. Of these 29 violent incidents, gun incidents were 11, physical incidents were 15 and social violence were 3. Importantly, the incidents related to robbery were 12.
In 2024, FOSDA Media Monitoring showed a decline of incidents from 29 to 19 representing a 34% decrease in the total cases recorded with 22 injuries and 5 deaths. The violence in the region in 2024 was characterised by gun-3 incidents; physical-10 incidents and sexual 6 incidents. Again, incidents of robbery linked to the violence recorded amounted was only 3. Comparatively this represents an 83% decline.
However, while this looks positive, if the 13 cases from the Police command database is to be accounted for in 2024, the data presents a worrying picture of a rise in robbery cases by 1 more incident compared to FOSDA’s data in 2023.
While we commend the Police command, we urge them to be more vigilant in the areas of gun violence, sexual and Physical violent incidents as it is likely going to be the security issues of concern in the region.
We urge them to deepen community policing to pre-empt violent crimes in the region and thwart arms proliferation to ensure total security and peace in the Region.
