The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa FOSDA highly commends the efforts of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority for the seizure of 53, 65 pieces of live ammunition, 74 magazines, and a PC hoster at the Golden Jubilee Terminal at the Tema Port.
This action demonstrates patriotism and commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the nation in this period of election period. FOSDA applauds such diligent work by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority. Such actions are critical arms control and minimizing the proliferation of illicit arms in the country.
As an organization dedicated to promoting peace and security in Ghana and the West Africa subregion, FOSDA remains deeply concerned about the proliferation of illicit firearms in Ghana. According to FOSDA’s Violent Incidents Monitoring reports, gun Violence constitute about 30% of violent cases recorded quarterly. It is also becoming a worrying phenomenon during elections. Ghana has recently recorded some Electoral gun violence and possession incidents in relation to the upcoming 2024 General Elections. It is also a major concern that such seizure happen during the election time.
We therefore call for thorough investigations into this seizure and ensure everyone related to their illicit importation into the country is exposed and prosecuted.
FOSDA urges GRA Custom Service and all relevant security agencies to continue strict control and monitoring of arms to maintaining peace before, during and after the 2024 general elections and beyond.
