FOSDA-trained Community Resilience Advocates have convened a series of Community Dialogues on Integration of Fulbes (Fulanis) in the Ullo community in the Jirapa Municipal Assembly of the Upper West Regions. The Community Dialogues, being led by trained Youth Resilient Advocates is to promote integration and minimize marginalisation of Fulbes in target communities in the Upper West Region. Ullo is one of the units under the Jirapa Municipal Assembly, comprising diverse ethnic groups including Fulbes, Dagabas, and others.
At the community dialogue, Fulbes and Dagabas interacted on important issues that are crucial for maintaining their peaceful coexistence. The Fulbes complained of discrimination. After a thorough and practical discussion of the issues raised, The Ulo Paramoun Chief present at the meeting disclosed that as leaders, the Fulbe Chiefs and the Dabaga Chiefs work together, and this unity should also transcend to the people in general. The following suggestions were made for improved integration.
- Fulbes should engage in other businesses like retail within the Ullo community. The community is prepared to offer land for that purpose. They shared examples of some Fulbes who are doing well in the township of Ullo.
- Fulbes should report any case of discrimination
- Educated Fulbes should come back home and support the integration process
- promote intertribal language learning to enhance communication and interaction.
- The meeting agreed that the community will reverse the community watchdog and include Fulbes
The Paramount Chief of Ullo urged youth leaders and participants to be peace agents and accept their cultural differences to enhance community integration.
This dialogue is part of the FOSDA ‘Resilient Dialogue Project,’ funded by the Danish Embassy in Ghana and WANEP, to promote the integration of Fulbes in the Upper West Region, especially as Ghana approaches the December 2024 General Elections
