Illicit Arms Production in Ghana

Advancing Human Security Since 2001

Illicit Arms Production in Ghana highlights how locally manufactured guns dominate 4 parts of the country i.e Alavanyo in the Volta Region, Suame Magazine in the Ashanti and Tamale and Yendi in Northern Region. A total of 220,000 arms are in civilian possession of which 125,000 representing 57% are illicit weapons. FOSDA’s research revealed that this phenomenon is driven by socio-historical factors including the high level technical skills of blacksmiths and gunsmiths who operate discretely; lack of enforcement in the licensing regime, arms trade as well as trafficking among neighboring countries.
